Etsy listing image requirements
Etsy shows the image to buyers rather than printing it, so the rules run the other way. Transparency is not supported at all — transparent areas render black. Aim for 2000 px on both sides, keep the first photo landscape or square and above 635 px, and stay under 1 MB or the upload may not finish.

Two images, two sets of rules
A print-on-demand seller is handling two different images and they are governed by opposite requirements. The print file goes to Printful, Printify, Redbubble or Merch; it wants a transparent background, as many pixels as you can give it, and it can run to tens or hundreds of megabytes. The listing image goes to Etsy; it must not be transparent, it is cropped to a thumbnail, and over 1 MB it may not even finish uploading. The two get confused because one is made from the other. Generate the mockup from the print file, flatten it, and keep them in separate folders — most of the failures here come from grabbing the wrong one.

Frequently asked questions
What size should an Etsy listing photo be?
At least 2000 px on both sides is what Etsy recommends, and the first photo must be at least 635 px on both sides — Etsy says falling short of that shows the listing lower in search. Landscape or square for the first photo, because the thumbnail crop takes more from a portrait image.
Why did my PNG turn black on Etsy?
Because it has a transparent background. Etsy does not support transparency and renders those areas as solid black. Flatten the image onto a background colour, or export the mockup rather than the print file.
What is the Etsy image file size limit?
Etsy says images larger than 1 MB may not finish uploading, especially on a slow connection. It is worded as a risk rather than a hard refusal, so treat it as a ceiling to design under rather than a line that always stops you.
Does Etsy accept WebP?
No. Etsy lists JPG, GIF, PNG, SVG and HEIC as the only supported types. WebP is not among them — and none of the print-on-demand platforms take it either, so a WebP export is a dead end at both ends of the workflow.
Does the DPI of my listing photo matter?
No. The image is displayed on a screen, never printed, so ink density is irrelevant. Pixel count is what matters, because Etsy crops and compresses.
